Episode 3: Bird of the Apocalypse

Sometimes we like to anthropomorphize things, holding them up as symbols–not for them, but for ourselves. This story is one of many.

World War I touched everyone–not just humans–creatures of all kinds were used in the fight across Europe. This one remembers Cher Ami, a pigeon who flew through it all and survived.

This episode of Artifacts was written, recorded, and researched by Natalie Shoemaker.

Cher Ami’s final resting place is within the National Museum of American History’s collections.
